Peer Leadership

PEER LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
P.E.P. (Peers Educating Peers)

The peer leadership transition program offers an opportunity for junior and senior students to assist their younger peers (freshmen) as they transition into high school. The program will benefit freshmen by providing a familiar face, a friendly ally and an additional resource for help throughout the year. In addition, it enables juniors and seniors to practice leadership skills and model positive behavior to their peers. Peer leaders will be trained in a variety of leadership skills and they will co-facilitate quarterly lesson plans with the freshmen in their physical education classes throughout the year.

Objectives

The P.E.P. Program is designed to develop the leadership and facilitation skills of older high school students while teaching them to provide outreach to their younger peers on topics such as, building relationships, fostering collaboration, increasing self-confidence, developing problem-solving skills, and acquiring healthy decision-making strategies. The program is seeking to achieve the following goals:
Young people are constantly faced with pressures to use alcohol and other drugs.·

Create a sense of belonging among incoming freshman

Teach students problem-solving, decision-making and interpersonal relationship skills

Increase students’ ability to balance their academic and social responsibilities while establishing positive goals

Teach students how to confront prejudice and support a more inclusive atmosphere

Help students to avoid a negative peer culture which promotes self-damaging behavior, such as, substance abuse
